Baby Car Mirror With No Headrest or in the Middle Seat: What Works

A baby car mirror hangs from the headrest behind your baby's car seat. So the question is always the same: is there a headrest there? If your baby rides in the middle seat, or the seat simply has no headrest, the answer might be no, and this guide is honest about what that means.
The Short Answer
Leo&Ella's mirrors need a headrest to hold on to, and we don't claim they fit a seat with none. What works, in order:
- Check the middle headrest. Many middle seats do have one, and then you fit a mirror the usual way.
- Use the next headrest over. If the middle has none, mount the mirror on the side headrest beside it and angle it toward your baby.
- Add a camera. The Camio camera also straps to a headrest, but it rotates 360° and sends the picture to a monitor, so you aim a lens instead of a reflection.
- No headrest anywhere in the back? Then there's nothing for either product to attach to.
Don't move the car seat for the mirror
NHTSA's advice is to put the car seat where you can install it correctly and snugly, in the back seat, following the car seat's and the vehicle's manuals. That decides where your baby rides. The mirror comes second: pick the seat position first, then work out the mirror. See NHTSA's car seat guidance.
Two Different Problems
"Middle seat" and "no headrest" get lumped together, but they aren't the same:
- The middle seat is a question of position. It often has a headrest, and when it does, nothing changes.
- No headrest is a question of mounting. It can happen in the middle or on the side, and the car seat position has nothing to do with it.
In the middle, the view into your rearview mirror is the easy part, because the baby sits roughly in line with it. The mount is the hard part. Drag the slider to see the same car with and without a middle headrest.

Option 1: Look Again for a Headrest
Before you assume there's nothing, look at the middle of the back seat and see what's there. Then match it to a mirror:

Posts, one piece, or nothing: what sits where the car seat does decides the mirror.
- Two exposed posts and a gap when raised. The Large and Medium mirrors are made for adjustable headrests with two exposed posts, and mount with buckle straps. The Tesla & Fixed mirror also fits adjustable headrests.
- One molded piece, no posts. The Tesla & Fixed mirror is built for it: a patent-pending continuous elastic loop, no straps or Velcro. The fixed-headrest install guide shows how to tell them apart.
Option 2: The Next Headrest Over
If the middle really has no headrest, you can mount the mirror on the side headrest next to it and turn it toward the center. The mirror rotates 360°, which is what makes the angle possible. The install and adjust guide covers the center-seat case too.
Treat it as something to try, not a guarantee. It only works if you can see your baby's face in your rearview mirror from the driver's seat. So:
- Install the mirror on the side headrest and wiggle it. It must not slide or sag.
- With your baby in the seat, sit where you drive and angle the mirror until their face shows in your rearview mirror.
- If you can't get a clear view, don't force it. Go to option 3.
A bigger mirror helps here, since more of the rear seat is in view. The Large and the Tesla & Fixed mirrors are both 11.5" x 7.5", and the Medium is 10" x 6.8".
Option 3: Camera on the Side Headrest
The Camio is a wired 1080p camera with a 5-inch monitor. Be clear about what it changes and what it doesn't:
- It doesn't remove the headrest requirement. Its camera straps to a back-seat headrest, just like a mirror.
- It does make an off-center baby easier to frame. The camera rotates 360°, so you point it at the baby from the side headrest. The monitor sits on the windshield or dashboard on a suction mount, so the picture doesn't depend on lining up with your rearview mirror.
- It adds night vision, with 4 infrared lights, and takes about 5 minutes to set up.
The mirror vs. camera comparison weighs the two against each other.
If There's No Headrest Anywhere
If no headrest in the back is available, there's no attachment point for our mirrors or for the Camio camera. We'd rather say so than sell you something that won't hold. Don't move the car seat to a worse position just to make a mirror fit. If you're unsure about your car seat position, a certified child passenger safety technician can check it.
Quick Answers
Can I use a baby car mirror in the middle seat? Yes, if the middle seat has a headrest, and the mirror fits it like any other headrest. If it doesn't, try the next headrest over.
Do Leo&Ella mirrors fit a seat with no headrest? No. They attach to a headrest, and we don't claim otherwise.
Which mirror for a fixed middle headrest? The Tesla & Fixed mirror, with its elastic loop.
Does the Camio need a headrest too? Yes, its camera straps to a back-seat headrest.
What about the free sunshade? Each mirror comes with a free car window sunshade 2-pack while supplies last. It may ship separately.
Check your headrest, then shop the Tesla & Fixed headrest baby car mirror, which fits fixed and adjustable headrests, or see the Large mirror for adjustable ones.
