## How it works

The calculator shows every Pampers size whose weight range includes the baby's weight; the ranges overlap, so between sizes it shows both and the fit decides. For counts, it lays Pampers' average months in each size end to end from birth (Newborn for 1.6 months, then Size 1 for 1.7, and so on to the end of Size 7 at about 34 months) and multiplies the days in each size by that size's average diapers a day, from the baby's current age to the potty-training age the parent picks (3 years by default). After Size 7 it keeps Size 7's 6 a day, since Pampers lists Size 8 as varying. With a pack price and count it also shows the cost per diaper, per month and in total.

## Key facts

- Pampers' size chart puts newborns at up to about 10 diapers a day, falling to up to 8 a day in Size 2, 7 a day in Sizes 3 and 4, and about 6 a day from Size 5. [1]
- On Pampers' US chart, Newborn diapers fit babies under 10 pounds, Size 1 fits 8 to 14 pounds and Size 2 fits 10 to 22 pounds, so the ranges overlap and the fit decides between sizes. [1]
- Pampers says to move up a size when a baby is in the next size's weight range and the diaper feels tight, leaves red marks on the skin, or leaks despite a proper fit. [1]
- Using Pampers' daily averages and the typical months babies spend in each size, a baby uses up to about 2,900 diapers in the first year (Pampers gives each size's daily count as a maximum). [1]
- The AAP says the average age toilet training begins in the US is between 2 and 3, and most children are bowel and bladder trained by 4. [2]

### Diaper size by weight (Pampers US chart)

Sizes go by weight, and the ranges overlap: between sizes, the fit decides. Kilograms are converted from Pampers' pounds.

| Size | Weight (lb) | Weight (kg) | Diapers a day | Per month | Months in size |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Preemie | under 6 lb | under 2.7 kg | – | – | – |
| Newborn | under 10 lb | under 4.5 kg | Up to 10 | About 304 | 1.6 |
| Size 1 | 8–14 lb | 3.6–6.4 kg | Up to 9 | About 274 | 1.7 |
| Size 2 | 10–22 lb | 4.5–10 kg | Up to 8 | About 244 | 2.8 |
| Size 3 | 13–26 lb | 5.9–11.8 kg | Up to 7 | About 213 | 5.8 |

### Diapers from birth to potty training

Pampers' average months in each size laid end to end from birth, at each size's daily average. Size 7 ends at about 34 months; after that the count stays at 6 a day, since Pampers lists Size 8 as varying. These are upper-end planning numbers: many babies use fewer.

| Out of diapers at | Diapers from birth |

| 3 years (the calculator's default) | About 7,479 |
| 3½ years | About 8,575 |
| 4 years | About 9,671 |

### The first year by size

| Size | Diapers in the first year |

## Frequently asked questions

### How many diapers does a newborn use a day?

Up to about 10 a day, according to Pampers' size chart. The number falls as babies grow: up to 8 a day in Size 2, 7 in Sizes 3 and 4, and about 6 a day from Size 5. Every baby is different, and younger babies may need more frequent changes.

### What size diaper does a 12-pound baby wear?

On Pampers' chart, Size 1 fits 8 to 14 pounds and Size 2 fits 10 to 22 pounds, so a 12-pound baby can wear either. Go by fit: if the diaper feels tight, leaves red marks or leaks despite a good fit, move up a size.

### How many diapers will I need in the first year?

Using Pampers' daily averages and how long babies typically stay in each size, about 2,900 diapers in the first year: roughly 490 newborn, 470 Size 1, 680 Size 2 and 1,240 Size 3. Treat it as a planning estimate; your baby's count may be lower.

### How long do babies stay in newborn diapers?

Newborn size fits babies up to 10 pounds, and Pampers puts the average time in it at about 1.6 months; many babies outgrow it within the first month. Buy newborn diapers in smaller packs until you know how fast your baby is growing.

### When should I move up a diaper size?

Pampers says to move up when your baby is in the next size's weight range and the diaper feels tight, leaves red marks on their skin, or leaks despite a proper fit. A good fit is snug without marks, with about two fingers' room under each leg opening.

### At what age do children stop wearing diapers?

The AAP says the average age toilet training begins in the US is between 2 and 3, and most children are bowel and bladder trained by 4. Signs of bladder and bowel control usually appear between 18 and 24 months.
